Many car lovers wait from many years to drive a Tesla in India. You will see outside India Tesla making huge profit by selling her Electric cars all across the World. Tesla holds a good position in the Chinese market, European market and also in the American auto market definately.
Now Tesla seriously wants to make profit from India's lucrative huge auto market. Tesla has tried for many years to enter the Indian market. Recently you will look Indin rejects Elon Musk’s demand of Tax relaxation on his car, hear elon specifically refers to import dues.
In 2019 Elon Musk said that he was interested in manufacturing in India, after that many discussions occurred between the Indian government and tesla. Also, PM Narendra Modi visited the Tesla manufacturing plant.
While Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration has been encouraging Tesla to produce locally, Musk wants India to lower taxes by 100% on imported EVs.
In the current situation if you import worth Rs. 28 lakh(INR) a new Tesla car then the price after tax goes Double(2x) and if the value is lower then tax is 60% on your car.
That is the reason why Tesla wants tax relief.
Previously all Mercedes-Benz, Audi, other car companies who import cars from outside also said to relieve tax, But no other start manufacturing in India also after complaining, But Tesla didn't do that.
Vivek Johri, chairman of the central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs says that
"We looked at whether the duties need to be re-jigged, but some domestic production is happening and some investments have come in with the current tariff structure"
